Changes to mobile search
Microsoft has announced an update to the Teams mobile application on iOS and Android. Starting in late 2026, the search bar will include an option to use Copilot, Microsoft’s artificial intelligence assistant, to answer queries based on your company’s internal data.
Currently, searching in Teams returns a list of specific messages, files, or people. This update will allow the app to synthesise that information into a direct answer. For example, if a user searches for a specific project status, the system can attempt to summarise recent discussions instead of just showing the files containing those keywords.
How the interface works
As a user types into the search bar, a prompt will appear to 'Ask Copilot'. Selecting this will open a conversation window. This maintains the context of the search, meaning the user does not have to switch between different sections of the app to find information and then ask questions about it.
This functionality is intended to help staff find information when they are working away from a desk. It can be used to recap meetings, find specific details in long chat threads, or locate documents where the exact file name is forgotten.
Deployment and requirements
This feature is scheduled for general availability in October 2026. This date is subject to change by Microsoft, as development timelines for mobile software often shift.
To use this feature, your business must have the appropriate Microsoft 365 licences that include Copilot. It is important to note that Copilot respects existing privacy settings; it cannot show a user information or files that they do not already have the rights to access. We recommend reviewing your folder and chat permissions periodically to ensure sensitive data is only visible to the correct staff members.
