What this means for your business

This affects businesses using custom AI agents or Copilot Studio environments. Administrators should review their AI credit usage and prepare to set spending limits when these tools become available to prevent budget overruns.

Overview of Copilot Studio billing changes

Microsoft has announced plans to integrate cost management for Copilot Studio into the Microsoft 365 admin center (MAC). Currently, managing the financial aspects of AI usage often requires navigating the Power Platform admin center. This update aims to centralise these controls, making it easier for business owners and IT managers to track how much is being spent on AI services.

Copilot Studio is a tool that allows businesses to create their own AI agents—software designed to perform specific tasks or answer customer queries. These agents run on a credit-based system, where usage incurs costs. Without central oversight, it can be difficult for small businesses to monitor how quickly these credits are consumed across different departments.

New spending policies and scopes

The update will allow administrators to apply spending policies to specific 'scopes'. In the first phase of the rollout, these scopes will include environments and individual agents. An environment is a space to store, manage, and share your business data and apps. By applying policies at this level, a business can set a hard limit on how many credits a specific project or department can use.

Microsoft has stated that support for user-based and group-based spending policies will follow in a later phase. This means that, eventually, you will be able to limit AI spend for specific teams or individual employees.

Integration with AI services

Beyond simple credit tracking, the update will introduce cost data into the agent registry for AI services built on Microsoft platforms. This includes agents created in Copilot Studio and other services like Cowork. This transparency is intended to help businesses identify which specific AI tools are providing value and which are exceeding their allocated budget.

Timeline and availability

Microsoft currently lists the General Availability (GA) date for these features as October 2026. It is important to note that roadmap dates are subject to change. While this update is a significant distance away, it indicates Microsoft's direction towards more granular financial control for small and medium businesses using AI.

At present, businesses using Copilot Studio should continue to monitor their usage via the Power Platform admin center. We will provide further updates if the timeline for these centralised controls moves forward.
