New integration capabilities for contact centres
Microsoft has announced a new feature for its Contact Center Intelligence platform called 'Tools'. These are functional components that allow an automated agent to interact with systems outside of its immediate interface. This development is intended to help businesses connect their customer service operations with other parts of their Microsoft 365 environment and external databases.
Currently, many automated customer service systems are limited to providing information. These new tools are designed to allow the system to take action. For example, if a customer makes a request via a chat interface, the system could be configured to send a confirmation email via Outlook or post a notification into a specific Teams channel for a staff member to review.
Potential use cases
The update includes pre-built connectors for several common business tasks. This includes the ability to read and write data to Dataverse, which is the underlying database used by many Microsoft business applications. It also includes connectors for weather data and Office 365 services.
For a small business, this means a customer support agent could potentially check the status of an order, update a client's contact details, or schedule a follow-up task directly within the support workflow. This reduces the need for staff to manually copy information between different windows or applications.
Timeline and availability
These features are currently in the development phase. Microsoft expects to make a preview version available in October 2026, with general availability following in November 2026.
It is important to note that these tools are specific to the Microsoft Contact Center Intelligence platform. Businesses not currently using this specific service will not see changes to their standard Teams or Outlook functionality. We do not yet have information regarding any additional licensing costs that may be associated with these integration tools. We will provide updates as more technical documentation becomes available closer to the launch date.
