Simplified AI management for Business Central
Microsoft has announced a change to how Dynamics 365 Business Central handles AI extensions and 'agents'—small software programs designed to automate specific tasks. Previously, businesses wanting to integrate custom AI capabilities often had to set up and maintain their own Azure OpenAI subscriptions. This required a level of technical knowledge regarding infrastructure management and cloud monitoring.
With this update, Microsoft is providing these AI resources directly within the Business Central environment. This removes the need for small and medium businesses to manually handle software updates, troubleshooting, or the maintenance of separate service subscriptions.
Technical overhead and reliability
For many UK businesses, managing a separate Azure subscription for AI can be a distraction from daily operations. The new approach uses Microsoft's own scaling and load balancing. This means that if demand for AI tasks increases, the system adjusts automatically to maintain performance without the business owner needing to intervene or pay for additional server capacity manually.
By moving the management to Microsoft, the system also gains built-in fault tolerance. If one part of the infrastructure fails, the service is designed to remain active, reducing the likelihood of downtime for your business tools.
Security and data residency
Security remains a significant concern for businesses adopting AI. This update includes built-in governance and protection against harmful content. It also addresses data residency requirements, which is the legal requirement for data to be stored in specific geographical locations.
Because the AI resources are now integrated into the standard Microsoft 365 framework, they fall under the existing compliance measures Microsoft provides for UK and European data standards. Business owners should still review their specific data handling policies, but the technical barrier to meeting these standards is lower with this integrated model.
We do not yet have information on whether this change will result in a price adjustment for Business Central licences, as Microsoft has focused the announcement on the technical delivery of these services.
