Contextual mode switching
Microsoft has announced a change to how its Copilot artificial intelligence app handles user requests. Currently, users interact with Copilot through a standard chat interface. From late 2026, the application will begin monitoring the intent of a prompt to determine if a specific 'mode' would be more suitable for the task.
If the system identifies a more appropriate tool—for example, the 'Cowork' mode designed for collaborative document editing—it will present a suggestion card. This card will explain why the alternative mode is recommended and provide a button to switch the interface.
Data and context retention
When a user chooses to switch to a suggested mode, the system is designed to carry the existing conversation history over to the new interface. This is intended to prevent the user from having to repeat instructions or re-upload information when moving between different parts of the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.
Microsoft has stated that as more specialised modes are developed, the app will include those in its suggestion logic. This indicates that the Copilot interface may become more fragmented into specific task-based views rather than a single general-purpose chat window.
Timeline for UK businesses
The feature is currently listed on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap with a General Availability (GA) date of November 2026. This is a long-term projection, and it is common for these dates to change as development progresses.
Small and medium businesses in the UK do not need to take any technical action at this stage. However, as the rollout approaches, internal training materials for AI use may need to be updated to reflect that the Copilot interface will no longer be static and may prompt users to change their workspace mid-conversation.
