Overview of the update
Microsoft has announced a change to how Teams Rooms on Windows handles shared content. Currently, when multiple people in a meeting share their screens, the room display typically shows only one at a time. This requires participants to stop sharing before another person can present.
A new update, scheduled for December 2026, will allow Teams Rooms to display two shared screens side by side. This is intended to help meetings where two pieces of information, such as a spreadsheet and a slide deck, need to be compared at the same time.
Hardware and layout options
The feature will behave differently depending on the physical setup of your meeting room. If your room has a single television or monitor, both shared screens will appear side by side on that one display. If the room has a dual-monitor setup, the layout will be automatically adjusted to use the available space.
In-room participants will have the option to switch between a side-by-side view and an expanded view, which focuses on one screen. The system will also display the name of each presenter next to their shared content to help identify who is speaking.
Licensing and availability
This feature is specifically for Teams Rooms on Windows. It does not apply to the standard Teams application used on individual laptops or mobile devices.
Microsoft has stated that this capability will be restricted to users with a Teams Rooms Pro licence. If your business currently uses the free 'Basic' licence that comes with some hardware, you will not be able to use the dual-sharing feature unless you upgrade the subscription.
Timeline
The current release date is set for December 2026. It is important to note that Microsoft often changes these dates during development. We do not yet know if there will be specific hardware requirements regarding processor speed or memory to support two simultaneous video streams in a room environment. We will provide further information as the release date approaches.
