Overview of the Skill Catalog
Microsoft has announced a new feature for Copilot Studio called the skill catalog. Copilot Studio is a platform that allows businesses to create their own AI agents—software assistants designed to perform specific tasks. Currently, if two different departments want an AI to perform the same task, such as processing an invoice or summarizing a specific type of report, they often have to build the instructions from scratch twice.
The skill catalog acts as a central library. It allows a user to create a 'skill'—a set of instructions or a connection to a specific database—and save it to a company-wide directory. Other staff members can then find and add these proven skills to their own AI agents without needing to write new code or instructions.
Management and Governance
The system is integrated with the Microsoft 365 App Store. This means that IT administrators or business owners can control which skills are available to the rest of the team. By using a centralized catalog, a business can ensure that AI agents are following the same set of rules and using the same data sources, which helps maintain consistency in how work is completed.
This move towards 'centralized governance' is intended to reduce the risk of staff creating unverified or inaccurate AI workflows. It also allows a business to share these skills across different Microsoft environments, including the standard M365 Copilot and Cowork.
Timeline for Implementation
Microsoft currently lists the preview date for this feature as September 2026, with general availability expected in October 2026. It is important to note that these dates are subject to change by Microsoft.
At this stage, business owners do not need to take any technical action. However, as the release approaches, it may be useful to identify repetitive digital tasks that could benefit from being turned into a standardized company 'skill'.
