Microsoft configuration change causes SharePoint access issues

A configuration update by Microsoft has caused SharePoint Online pages to appear blank for some users. The issue originated from a change to the service's underlying code that was not fully validated before deployment.

What this means for your business

Staff may be unable to view internal company pages or access document libraries through the web interface. If your business relies on SharePoint for daily operations, you should check the Microsoft 365 Service Health Dashboard for updates and advise employees to try refreshing their browsers.

The nature of the outage

Microsoft has acknowledged a problem where SharePoint Online pages fail to load correctly, instead displaying a blank screen. This issue began following a configuration change implemented by Microsoft engineers. In technical terms, the change affected how the web browser interprets the page code, leading to a failure in rendering the content for the user.

Reports indicate that while the files stored within SharePoint remain safe and accessible via direct links or synced folders, the visual interface used to navigate these files is currently unreliable for a portion of the user base.

The cause and current status

According to reports, the issue stems from a deployment that was not sufficiently tested for all user environments. Microsoft often updates its cloud services in the background, but in this instance, a specific change to the site's script handling caused an error.

Microsoft is currently working to revert the configuration to a previous, stable state. They have not provided a specific timeline for when the fix will reach all UK tenants, as these updates are often rolled out in stages across different data centres.

Actions for business owners

If your staff report that SharePoint is not loading, it is unlikely to be a problem with your local office network or individual computers. We recommend the following steps:

  1. Verify the status through the Microsoft 365 Admin Centre under the 'Service Health' section.
  2. Advise staff to use the OneDrive for Business sync app to access files directly through Windows File Explorer, as this method is typically unaffected by web interface issues.
  3. Avoid making changes to your own SharePoint site settings or permissions until the service is confirmed as stable, as this may complicate the recovery process.

We will monitor the situation and provide further information if the disruption persists or if Microsoft identifies a specific security implication, though none has been reported so far.
