Improving data reliability for field staff
Microsoft has announced updates to the way Dynamics 365 Field Service handles data when a mobile device is not connected to the internet. This process, known as up-syncing, occurs when a technician enters information into the app while offline and the system later uploads that data to the main business database once a connection is restored.
Previously, users and office staff could face uncertainty regarding whether updates—such as completed job details or status changes—had successfully reached the system. The forthcoming update aims to make this process more reliable by allowing data to sync in the background and providing clearer status indicators within the app.
Background synchronisation and user notifications
One significant change is the introduction of background up-syncing. This allows the application to continue sending data to the server even if the user is not actively interacting with the app, provided the device has a data connection.
Additionally, the mobile interface will now include specific notifications if changes are still pending. If a technician finishes a task in an area with poor signal, the app will clearly state that additional synchronisation is required. This is intended to remove the need for staff to manually refresh the app or contact the office to verify that their reports have been received.
Timeline and implementation
Microsoft has not provided an exact date for the rollout to all UK tenants, but the feature is currently listed on the official product roadmap.
For small and medium businesses in the UK, no immediate configuration changes are usually required to enable these features. However, it is advisable to inform field teams that these interface changes are coming, as they will see new status indicators regarding their offline work. Ensuring that mobile devices are set to allow background data usage for the Dynamics 365 app will be necessary to benefit from the background sync functionality.
